City Guide Alicante
Alicante is located on the Eastern seaboard of Spain, south of Valencia. An ancient and historic city it dates back to Roman times, it was known by them as 'Lucentum' and as 'Benacantil' under the Arabs.
The city itself is busy and pleasant during the day. The prime attraction is the Castillo de Santa Barbara, a huge medieval fortress overlooking Alicante from the north. It is easily accessible by a cable car up through the mountain from Jovellanas Avenue.

The oldest church in Alicante is Santa Maria, a gothic building dating from the 14th century and built over the ruins of a moorish mosque.
There are many interesting historical buildings in Alicante, notably along the Calle Los Labradores where you find many of the old palaces and feudal homes of the cities wealthy and noble.
If you'd like to explore further afield, you can also visit the ruins of the San Fernando Castle, the Catedral of San Nicola and the bull-ring which is located within walking distance of the centre of Alicante.
Alicante's Puerto Maritimo (the maritime port) is a delightful stroll past relaxing cafes and eateries. From this area you can catch the regular day-trip ferries to the island of Tabarca, once home of pirates, and now a superb beach resort.
The beaches around Alicante are also well worth a visit in your hire car. The best beaches in Alicante are located outside the city in Playa de San Juan (approx 10 minutes north) or Urbanova (approx 15 minutes south).
